Reflecting on the whirlwind of the past two years, it’s safe to say my life has been nothing short of extraordinary. From navigating the challenging terrain of divorce to embracing the unexpected role of a Starbucks barista, the most daunting adventure of all was re-entering the dating scene as a 35-year-old single mom. It’s the kind of narrative that might make you gasp and reach for your pearls, contemplating the idea of restarting life’s clock at thirty-five. But, if there’s anyone up for the challenge, it’s this self-proclaimed Black Mary Poppins.
After spending five years as a devoted stay-at-home wife and mom, I felt a calling for a job that not only paid the bills but also recognized the value I brought. The local Starbucks became my sanctuary, a place where everyone knew my name. Little did I know, it marked the genesis of my love affair with coffee and the inspiration to lead. Despite my initial reservations about being a barista, the rich aroma, taste, and the lively presence of caffeine enthusiasts soon won me over.
However, as my newfound independence flourished, so did my hunger for a more fulfilling purpose. It became evident that I desired to serve in a capacity aligned with my passion.
In my belief that reading equals freedom, I embarked on a journey to devour a new book every month. These books spanned the realms of spirituality and personal development, each one igniting a spark within me. One book, in particular, shook the foundation of my perspective.
In ‘Leaders Eat Last,’ Simon delves into the essence of great leadership within companies. His concept of a ‘Circle of Safety’ resonated deeply with me. He asserts, ‘Only when we feel we are in a Circle of Safety will we pull together as a unified team, better able to survive and thrive regardless of the conditions outside.’
As the years advanced, the truth of this statement became more apparent. Safety should not be a luxury; it’s a fundamental need. I aspire to create an environment where entering and leaving work is devoid of fear and anxiety. Throughout my life’s transitions, my overarching goal is to evolve into the leader I never had and to inspire others to seek out environments with a ‘Circle of Safety.’
Simon wisely notes, ‘There are only two ways to influence human behavior: you can manipulate it or you can inspire it.’ My unequivocal choice? To inspire it!”
