Searching for a job these days is truly a full-time job in and of itself! Whether you’re scrolling through LinkedIn, Indeed, or Built-In, the process of filling out applications is just the tip of the iceberg. The most frustrating part? Many job applications ask you to repeat the same information, create accounts you’ll never use again, and answer essay-style questions about why you’re seeking employment (cue eye-roll). I mean, we know why we’re both here, so let’s not get deep about a job application.
So, what happens after you’ve invested time into entering all your information and hitting “submit”? Sometimes, you’re lucky enough to receive an email requesting an interview, either over the phone or via video chat. Great, right? But often, this is just the start of a long, drawn-out process. Nowadays, the initial interaction is often just to “feel out” the candidate—to see if your personality fits their work culture. And if you pass that first test? Get ready for potentially two or more rounds of interviews with different team members—and maybe even their cousins (ok, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point).
Then, there’s the waiting game. It feels like human resources departments have lost sight of the “human” aspect. Job seekers are often left waiting for weeks—sometimes months—after multiple interviews with no updates, only to find out the position was paused or filled. This lack of communication can cause intense frustration and anxiety, especially when you’ve invested so much time and energy into the process.
It’s almost like being on a dating app—where you think you’ve sparked a connection, only to be ghosted by the company. No feedback, no closure, no explanation. Did they go with someone else? Did the position disappear? You’re often left in the dark, unsure of what went wrong.
This frustrating cycle has happened to me more than once, and I know I’m not alone. So, what’s the solution? Unfortunately, there’s no magic fix to the modern job-hunting process, but we can protect our energy and manage our expectations. Remember, you’re not just a candidate—you’re a person with value, skills, and worth. Don’t let a lengthy, unclear hiring process dim your confidence or take away your peace. Keep pushing forward, and the right opportunity will come—one that values both your talent and your time.
In this digital age, the job search has become more complex and impersonal, often feeling like you’re chasing after elusive opportunities with little feedback. But while the process can be mentally exhausting, remember that every “no” brings you closer to the right “yes.” Stay persistent, keep your confidence intact, and know that the right fit is out there—it just may take time to find.
