AI & SEO: Why I’m Not Buying the “SEO is Dead” Narrative

, , ,

Every time a new piece of technology hits the scene, the internet loves to declare something “dead.” Now, with AI’s rise in the spotlight, SEO seems to be the latest victim of this headline drama. But here’s the thing: I don’t believe SEO is dead — not even close.

Is AI changing the way we search, create, and interact online? Absolutely. But is it the big bad wolf we should all be running from? Not in my opinion.

The real challenge in SEO right now isn’t AI, it’s Google. More specifically, it’s the constant algorithm shifts, SERP (search engine results page) changes, and core updates that leave businesses scrambling. That’s where the real unpredictability lies. AI is just a tool; how we use it determines whether it helps or hurts.

AI can actually make SEO smarter. It can help generate insights faster, support content strategies, and even help marketers spend less time on the repetitive stuff and more time on the creative, human side of content. Instead of replacing SEO, AI is reshaping it.

So why does it feel so polarizing right now? Fear. Fear that jobs will disappear, that search will be unrecognizable, that everything we’ve learned about SEO suddenly won’t matter. But if you step back, you’ll see it’s just another evolution, and SEO has always been about evolution. From keyword stuffing to mobile-first to voice search, we’ve adapted before, and we’ll adapt again.

If anything, this moment is a reminder: SEO professionals need to stay flexible, curious, and open to new ways of working. The fundamentals still matter…good content, user-focused experiences, and technical health. AI doesn’t change that, and Google’s updates only reinforce it.

So no, SEO isn’t dead. It’s shifting, bending, and evolving like it always has. Instead of fearing AI, we should be asking ourselves: How can I use it to make my strategy stronger?

3 Ways to Use AI to Boost Your SEO (Instead of Fearing It):

  1. Content Ideation & Outlines – Use AI to brainstorm blog ideas, create outlines, or find fresh angles on evergreen topics. This saves time while keeping the human touch in your writing.
  2. Data & Keyword Analysis – AI tools can process large sets of data quickly, helping you spot trends, find semantic keywords, and better understand user intent.
  3. Content Optimization – From improving readability to drafting meta descriptions, AI can help fine-tune your content so it performs better in search without replacing your voice.

Because the truth is, the “death of SEO” has been predicted for over a decade… and yet, here we are.
