The Beautiful Delay: How a Broken Train Restored My Faith in Humanity

, ,

There is a specific kind of dread that hits when you’re exhausted at the end of a long workday, ready to get home, and the announcement comes over the loudspeaker: All trains are delayed.

As someone who navigates life with an anxious mind, being trapped on a packed platform with more than a hundred tired, hungry, and frustrated strangers is usually my absolute worst nightmare. Your instinct is to hyper-focus on the claustrophobia, to clam up, and to view everyone around you as a barrier between you and your comfort.

But tonight, the universe decided to show me something different. Tonight, a storm knocked down the wires, but it also knocked down our walls.

Before we even boarded, the magic started on the platform. We stood there for an hour and a half, tired and draining our emotional batteries, but instead of retreating into our phones, people started talking. I found a low-key, outside protector in a familiar face, a guy I see on my commute all the time. Without it being weird or intrusive, I just knew to stay close to him as he navigated the platforms, and his quiet presence made me feel entirely safe.

When we finally squeezed onto the packed train, I managed to snag a seat next to two wonderful women I had never seen before in my life. For the next few stops, we didn’t just coexist; we connected. We laughed about an annoying passenger who refused to make room, we traded thoughts on movies, and we bonded over music and life.

Looking around that crowded train car, I felt this overwhelming wave of gratitude. Everybody was taking care of each other. In a situation where people could have easily been selfish, rude, or angry, they chose to be kind, respectful, and funny. It was a living, breathing reminder of what humanity actually is when you strip away the fear. We spend so much time being scared of one another, but tonight proved we don’t have to be.

I’m finally home now. I’m exhausted, my stomach is growling, and I desperately need to wash the rainy commute off my skin. But my soul feels entirely full. Sometimes, the universe delays your destination just to remind you that the journey is full of beautiful souls. This high-key restored my faith in us.
